Brooke Merritt was appointed to be principal at Freeport Intermediate in August 2013. Prior to her appointment, she served Brazosport ISD an Assistant Principal and proud Exporter at Brazosport High school. She was an Assistant Principal within Brazosport ISD for three years and has been an educator since 1998. In her previous district, she was the Administrator of Secondary Activities. She served as an Administrative Intern and Campus Intervention Specialist on a 7th and 8th grade campus. Prior to leaving the classroom, she had served as a PE, Adaptive PE, Resource English, Behavior Adjustment, Leadership, and PALS teacher and coached Volleyball, Basketball, Softball, and Track.
She is a proud graduate of Stephen F. Austin State University. She earned her Bachelors of Science degree in May 1998 majoring in Kinesiology and Special Education. Later, she returned to SFA to earn her Masters of Education in Educational Leadership in August 2001. She was the first in her family to receive an undergraduate degree and also led the way in her family in receiving a Masters degree.
Brooke Merritt’s husband, Keith Merritt is an educator in Houston ISD. She has two beautiful step-daughters Keisha and Kiana. Keisha graduated from North Texas State University majoring in art education and is teaching in Rockwall ISD. Kiana is studying psychology and minoring in criminal justice through Arizona State University.
Brooke says, “I’m excited to serve as the Principal of Freeport Intermediate. I love being a part of the lives of our kids here in Freeport and look forward to many great years of service to come.”
Ian White was appointed to Assistant Principal at Freeport Intermediate in July 2013. Prior to this assignment, he was a math teacher and coach at Brazosport High School for two years. Before joining the BISD family, Ian spent 12 years in various educational settings throughout the state of Texas. During those 12 years, he taught and coached in Dallas, Tenaha, Royal, and Carthage Independent School Districts. Additionally, Ian was a Plant Operations Director for two years at Tenaha ISD. During his coaching career, he was fortunate enough to win State Championships in Football, Track, and Power-lifting and was a part of several other successful programs.
Ian received his Bachelors of Science degree from Harding University in May of 2000 while on a football scholarship where he graduated with a degree in Kinesiology and a minor in Math. In 2011, he received his Master’s degree from Stephen F. Austin University in Educational Leadership. Of a family of seven, he was the first to graduate from college and ultimately receive a Master’s degree.
Ian is married to Lekay White, his college sweetheart. Lekay, also a member of the BISD family, is a special education teacher at Brazosport High School. Ian and Lekay have two children; Ethan and Avery. Both children attend schools in BISD.
